Essential Safety Habits for CAT Response
John Reasoner breaks down PPE, footwear, buddy systems, and preparedness needed for CAT season
Welcome to episode #3 of our Technical Tip Tuesday on CAT Preparedness with John Reasoner, Senior Director of Catastrophe Services at Paul Davis Restoration. This week, we’re focusing on the critical safety habits that are non‑negotiable during CAT work.
There are four core foundations that apply to everything we do, especially in CAT response: PPE, proper attire (with a focus on footwear), buddy systems, and overall preparedness. These may sound basic, but they are the backbone of a safe and successful job.
PPE is non‑negotiable. Crews should complete quick daily checks, stay stocked in all sizes, and make sure gear fits and functions properly. Proper footwear matters too, wearing the wrong shoes leads to injuries and slows down your production.
Extreme heat or cold increase your risks, that’s where the buddy system comes into play and keeps your teams safe. CAT work relies on preparedness: a solid JSA, a brief safety meeting, and enough supplies to last the entire job. If you run out of the right tools, the job stops.
We’ve all been on CAT sites where someone suddenly realizes, “We don’t have everything we need.” Consider this your friendly reminder: now is the time to get prepared so your teams are set up for success before the chaos hits.
Thanks for tuning in. We’ll see you next week!
