Preserving History: Reviving Smithtown Library's Artifacts

By Kayla McGowan
March 5, 2025

In this episode of Ask the Expert, we are joined by industry expert Adam Lyszczarz. He is a Marine Corps veteran and the Program Manager for Documentation Restoration Services at Prism Specialties in Southwest Michigan. He has over a decade of experience in the restoration industry and specializes in document restoration and disaster response. He is dedicated to preserving important documents and historical materials, bringing both hands-on expertise and innovative solutions to the industry.

On August 19th, the Smithtown Library on Long Island experienced a catastrophic water event. Flash floods poured over seven inches of rain, inundating the library’s bottom level and causing significant damage to computers, books and documents. Thousands of books and documents were affected, including a collection of 17th-century artifacts such as the town deed and letters signed by Thomas Jefferson.

In response to this crisis, these precious items were handled and are being restored by Prism Specialties. Using advanced technology, the historic collection is undergoing meticulous restoration. It's estimated that 80-90% of the artifacts will be successfully restored.

Key Discussion Points:

  1. Initial Assessment and Response: Adam shares insights into the initial assessment and response when arriving at the flood-damaged Smithtown Library.
  2. Challenges in Restoring Historic Documents: Adam discusses the significant challenges faced in restoring historic documents and artifacts, particularly those dating back to the 17th century.
  3. Cutting-Edge Restoration Technology: Learn about the cutting-edge technology and techniques used by Prism Specialties to restore the damaged items and prevent mold growth.
  4. Prioritizing Restoration Efforts: Find out how Adam and his team prioritize which artifacts and documents to restore first, especially when dealing with a large volume of historically significant materials.
  5. Lessons Learned for Future Responses: Adam shares valuable lessons from this restoration project that can be applied to future disaster responses, particularly in preserving historical and cultural assets.
