From late June 2014 and into early July, two separate strings of storms swept over central Iowa, producing as many as 11 tornadoes, and knocking down telephone poles, downing trees and flooding out homes.

I marvel at the evolution of our industry over the last couple of decades. I believe we are operating in a time of great opportunity. 

It was spring 2012 when an air conditioning unit in the attic above the Freeport Art Museum’s (FAM) storage facility malfunctioned, spewing water onto the ceiling tiles and floor, eventually coming into contact with several works of art.

With franchises continuing to advance as a player in the restoration industry, it can be difficult for an independent company to flourish, especially if that company is newly established and doesn’t have long-standing relationships with area adjusters, property managers and clients or a sizable marketing budget.

If you’ve spent any amount of time in the water damage restoration industry, surely you are familiar with this scenario.

Every restoration business owner I talk to in the metro Detroit area is quick to tell me what a busy winter they had, thanks to the polar vortex leading to lots of broken pipes and water losses. And it appears that this August is shaping up nicely for them too thanks to record rainfall in southeast Michigan Monday afternoon.

 The IICRC announced it is revising the ANSI/IICRC S500-2006 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration aand substantive changes since the last public review are now available for an additional public review and comment through Aug. 31, 2014. 

Its estimated that up 20 million gallons of water flooded UCLA’s campus on Tuesday when a 93-year-old water main busted, spewing water 30 feet into the air and sending water throughout many of the streets and buildings on campus.
