Wildfire Risk, Data, and the future of Fire Restoration
How conflagration risk, technology, and property data are reshaping fire restoration preparedness
Welcome to a very special episode of Ask The Expert, focused on fire risk, data, and the future of fire restoration. We’re joined by Jamie Knippen, Director of Hazard Insights at Cotality. Jamie works at the intersection of science, data, and product development, specializing in hazard and spatial solutions.
Key topics of discussion include:
- One thing we talk about is terminology, specifically conflagration. Jamie explains that a conflagration happens when wildfire moves from vegetation into the built environment, where man-made structures become the fuel. At that point, you’re no longer dealing with just a wildfire; you’re dealing with a rapid structure-to-structure fire.
- Wildfire is now a year-round risk, and it’s no longer isolated to the West Coast. Jamie shares some interesting data on Texas, which ranks third for properties most at risk, representing $1.4 trillion in reconstruction cost value.
- Another challenge restorers face is what happens when multiple large-scale events occur at the same time. Resources become limited, and local authorities may restrict access after the event. For restorers, that can mean delays getting to the job site.
- Data can also help restorers before, during, and after an event. Jamie shares how tools like Cotality's Wildfire Risk Report 2026 and conflagration risk scores can help restorers better understand the risks in the areas they serve.
- Technology can now analyze individual structures and provide information on things like roof type, window resilience, and how close neighboring structures are. When you combine that with geospatial data on wind, topography, and slope, you get a clearer picture of the risk.
- Wildfire risk continues to move into areas that historically haven’t experienced these types of events. Restorers have an opportunity to take a more proactive approach in their communities through preparedness lunch and learns, conversations around fire-resistant materials, and education on options like ember-resistant vents.
