What Restoration Professionals Need to Know About HVAC Systems and Indoor Air Quality

Why HVAC systems are the hidden driving force of indoor air quality and how restoration professionals can deliver healthier and more complete outcomes

By Kayla McGowan
January 14, 2026

On this episode of Ask The Expert, we’re joined by Becky Callegan. We discuss what restoration professionals need to know about the HVAC system and indoor air quality. Becky, MSRED, is the Assistant Program Coordinator for Change the Air Foundation and co-owner of ACC Building Performance LLC.

Becky’s love and passion for the restoration industry stems from an experience her and her family had when her husband AJ was suffering from mold toxicity that made him deathly ill. Through science, the right technical experts, and education, AJ was able to overcome his illness and now gives back to the industry alongside Becky.

Topics of discussion include:

  • How HVAC systems contribute to client health issues and why restoration contractors should partner with HVAC experts to identify and address the root cause of any issues.
  • The HVAC system is the "lungs of the building" and it plays a critical role in indoor air quality that is often overlooked on restoration jobs.
  • Becky and AJ's personal journey with mold exposure highlights how important it is for restoration professionals to listen to clients, show empathy, and not dismiss their concerns.
  • Restoration and HVAC professionals should collaborate and educate each other to provide the best solutions possible for their customers.
  • A trend of private equity firms buying up small restoration and HVAC businesses, and shifting their focus from quality service and customer relationships to profits.
