Dr. Randy Rapp, D.Mgt., PE, CCP, is the Purdue Polytechnic Named Professor of Disaster Restoration and Reconstruction at Purdue University and Associate Professor of Construction Management Technology. His primary responsibilities are managing the 9-credit Intermediate Construction Management course and the Demolition and Disaster Recovery Management concentration and serving on Master’s and Ph.D. graduate committees. With Halliburton-KBR in 2005-06, he worked hurricanes Katrina and Wilma; he managed project controls to restore Iraqi oil for KBR in Basra, 2006-07, and demobilized that effort upon promotion to Deputy Program General Manager duties. In 2007-08 he served as the only Subject Matter Expert for the Technical, Education, and Certification Committees of AACE International (cost engineers). Earlier, he directed the Construction Management program at Milwaukee School of Engineering. In 1995 he culminated his military career as a Deputy District Engineer in the Army Corps of Engineers after tours in NATO, the Pentagon, the Army Engineer School, and the 101st Airborne.

Since the 1990s, experts have been declaring burnout levels are reaching epidemic proportions among North American workers (Maslach & Leiter, 1997). Since that time, most people would probably agree that work related stressors have only intensified with the proliferation of metrics, technology, and the need to be “on” all the time.
During the past three years, Purdue’s Building Construction Management program has been a hot topic among restoration industry professionals. Much of the excitement stemmed from the idea of the opportunities being developed for future leaders of the restoration industry to actually receive a bachelor’s degree with a specialization in disaster restoration and reconstruction.
