In Memoriam: Philip J. McLaughlin, CR#045

By Doug Heiferman
October 15, 2008

Guest blogger Doug Heiferman shares his thoughts and feelings on the passing of Phil McLaughlin and the impact he had on the restoration industry.

Recently, the restoration industry suffered a great loss with the passing of industry legend and author Phil J McLaughlin.

Phil was instrumental in helping the restoration industry to develop into a business we professionals are proud to be a part of. He was a real trailblazer who believed education was a lifelong journey. Phil was a teacher and mentor to many individuals who benefited from his vast knowledge and love of his chosen craft.

Teaching was something Phil loved, just like I do, so we developed a strong friendship in the short year I had the privilege of knowing him. Phil enjoyed helping young entrepreneurs to become better business people. He truly cared about the success of his students. When it came to business networking and developing lasting business relationships, there was no one better than Phil. All the big players in the restoration and insurance industries knew and respected Phil. If you ever had the pleasure of meeting Phil you might have guessed his college degree was in business specializing in marketing.

Phil would call me on a monthly basis to discuss issues relevant to education in our industry. I am blessed and honored that a gentleman of Phil's stature and experience valued my opinions on education. We often discussed his new class, which focused on insider secrets and how to network with large insurance companies, in addition to independent business sources that would enable a restoration company to soar to new heights. Phil was definitely a legend in restoration who left a larger-than-life footprint in an industry many of us love so much.

All of us in the restoration and textile cleaning industry mourn Phil's passing. Our industry sends our condolences to his family. Phil will be remembered by his peers and students as an inspirational person who made a difference in their lives. The industry he loved very much will remember him for the special person he truly was.

We should all use Phil as an example and never stop learning and loving life. God bless you Phil. Thanks for all you have done for our industry. Sincerely,
Doug Heiferman
