They say only two things in life are certain—death and taxes. But let’s be real—there’s a third: viruses in the workplace. We’ve all seen nasty bugs sweep through the office, taking down the team one by one. The real problem? Most people focus on reacting instead of preventing. But here’s the truth: a little prevention goes a long way in protecting your team’s health and keeping your business running smoothly. To stop viruses in their tracks, you need a targeted office cleaning checklist designed specifically for disinfection.

Think about this…

  • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 22 million sick days are taken each year due to the common cold alone.
  • A doorknob can have 14 different colonies of bacteria, each with more than a million bacteria*

Just these two facts alone I would imagine are enough to give you the ick. So what can we do about it? A LOT. We have to start somewhere so let’s start with sick days and office productivity.

The Importance of Office Disinfection

Office disinfection goes beyond regular cleaning. It involves removing germs, bacteria, and viruses from surfaces to create a safe and healthy workspace. A clean and disinfected office promotes the well-being of your employees. It reduces the risk of illness and absenteeism, ensuring that your team stays productive and healthy.

The Office Disinfection Checklist

So, let’s dive into the essential steps for effective office disinfection. This checklist will help you cover all the key areas of your office.

1. Preparing for Disinfection

  • Gather Supplies: Ensure you have the necessary cleaning and disinfection supplies, including EPA-approved disinfectants, gloves, masks, disposable wipes.
  • Read Labels: Be sure to read the instructions on your product.  Disinfectants have unique dwell times to be effective.
  • Clear Surfaces: Remove clutter and items from surfaces to allow thorough disinfection.

2. High-Touch Surfaces

  • Doorknobs and Handles: Disinfect all doorknobs, handles, and push plates.
  • Light Switches: Wipe down light switches in common areas and offices.
  • Elevator Buttons: Clean elevator buttons regularly.
  • Keyboards and Mice: Disinfect computer keyboards and mice.

3. Workstations

  • Desks and Tables: Disinfect all work surfaces, including desks, tables, and countertops.
  • Chairs: Wipe down chair armrests and backs.
  • Phones: Clean and disinfect office phones.

4. Common Areas

  • Breakrooms: Disinfect tables, chairs, and appliances in breakrooms.
  • Restrooms: Regularly clean and disinfect restroom fixtures, handles, and sinks.
  • Meeting Rooms: Sanitize meeting room tables and chairs.

5. Electronics

  • Computers and Monitors: Clean computer screens and monitor surfaces.
  • Printers and Copiers: Wipe down the surfaces of office equipment.

6. Floors

  • Floor Cleaning: Regularly clean and disinfect floors using appropriate methods for the flooring type.

7. HVAC Systems

  • Air Ducts and Filters: Ensure that air ducts and filters are regularly cleaned and replaced to maintain good air quality.

Differentiating Disinfection from Cleaning

Furthermore, It’s essential to understand the difference between disinfection and regular cleaning. Cleaning involves removing dirt and dust from surfaces, while disinfection kills germs and bacteria. To maintain a safe and healthy workspace, both cleaning and disinfection are necessary.

Prioritize Office Disinfection for a Safer, Healthier Workplace

Overall, office disinfection is an essential part of maintaining a safe and healthy workplace. By following a comprehensive cleaning checklist that includes high-touch surfaces, workstations, common areas, electronics, floors, and HVAC systems, you can create a workspace that promotes well-being and instills confidence in your clients and employees.

Don’t compromise the health and safety of your office environment.
