Too often this critical testing step is ignored or avoided and yet, it is probably one of the more important engineering controls on any restoration or remediation project. Only through objective diagnostics can a baseline be established by which both interim and post remediation verification be documented for approval and final payment.

Advances in Mold Mycotoxin Protocols Take Center Stage
Over the past 25 years, mold has gone from a little known hazard to a full-fledged segment of the restoration industry. Many of the remediation techniques initially adopted for mold from other industries (such as asbestos abatement and lead paint removal) have proven successful and are still used. Isolating the work, putting the remediation efforts under negative pressure, conducting detailed cleaning until the removal zone is dust free, and using HEPA filtered vacuums are critical steps in any mold remediation project.
However, new information about the presence, movement, and danger of mycotoxins (poisonous chemicals produced by many molds) means that mold remediation techniques need to be adapted to deal with this significant hazard. This presentation will provide attendees with solid information about what mycotoxins are, how prevalent they are in mold contaminated structures, the dangers the poisons pose to occupants if not removed, and techniques which have been confirmed to be effective in eliminating the hazard. Specifically, the presenter will explain a modification to the “HEPA Sandwich” cleaning process and discuss different classes of chemicals that have been shown to remove mycotoxins from surfaces.

The IICRC S500 Standard for Professional Water Damage Restoration defines 3 different Categories of water damage which has a direct impact on how the restorer will proceed with structural drying. When is a water damage jusified in being classified as Category 3? It has become a complex issue which has escalated the cost of mitigation claims and the resulting problems for mitigation contractors getting paid and in some cases being subrogated against due to claims of causing excessive damage from uneseccary demolition.
